The Zeitgeist Movie has sparked a movement over the past 5 years...and rightly so. With so many obvious facts stated in the two movies Zeitgeist and Zeitgeist Adendum it baffles me as to how the general population and particually governments around the globe cannot sit up and take notice and begin a change that is so desperately needed for society to find freedom and evolution.

If you haven't yet seen these films i urge you to take the time to educate yourself and open your eyes.

This last link is to The Venus Project, although it may sound like a sci fi movie title, the aim is to realistically create a bold, new direction for humanity that entails nothing less than the total redesign of our culture. Its a big task indeed but we have to begin somewhere.....follow the jump for more.

As we made our dash for the channel earlier this week the snow had already begun to fall, little did we know how long this cold snap would last. 2 days later this is what the country looked like viewed from NASAs orbitting satellite. Conditions are supposed to hold for the next 9 days and with the UK plummeted into its mini ice age my fingers are crossed for a nation that normally grinds to a standstill over 2cm of the white stuff.

"The Art Gallery of Ontario kindly let me use their parking lot for this project. It’s a fenced-off enclosure that bisects Butterfield Park and Grange Park here in downtown Toronto. The installation became a bit of a marathon as I tied it together over a solid twenty-four hour period, overnight and through some light rain. In the end, I used more than 21,663 feet of salvaged string - two high-tension lengths for each of the 231 points/nodes crossing the 44-foot distance between the fences, plus the letter outlines. So far, the squirrels haven’t chewed on it for their nests…'

Marine was playing in Bayonne on Saturday Night in La Luna Negra Cafe, a real Beat feeling, you could almost hear the Jazz and see Jack Kerouac taking stage. The place is in what feels like an old tunnel and had an amazing sound. Marine has come a long way since we played the Cream Cafe, not normally my thing but we all need a lullaby sometimes.

The following is quoted from Charles Moore of the Algalita Marine Research Foundation. Dr. Moore is the captain of the private research vessel, the Alguita:

"There is a large part of the central Pacific Ocean that no one ever visits and only a few ever pass through. Sailors avoid it like the plague for it lacks the wind they need to sail. Fishermen leave it alone because its lack of nutrients makes it an oceanic desert. This area includes the "horse latitudes," where stock transporters in the age of sail got stuck, ran out of food and water, and had to jettison their horses and other livestock Surprisingly, this is the largest ocean realm on our planet, being about the size of Africa—over 10 million square miles. A huge mountain of air, which has been heated at the equator, and then begins descending in a gentle clockwise rotation as it approaches the North Pole, creates this ocean realm. The circular winds produce circular ocean currents that spiral into a center where there is a slight down-welling. Scientists know this atmospheric phenomenon as the subtropical high, and the ocean current it creates as the north Pacific central or sub-tropical gyre. Because of the stability of this gentle maelstrom, the largest uniform climatic feature on Earth is also an accumulator of the debris of civilization. Anything that floats, no matter where it comes from on the north Pacific Rim or ocean, ends up here, sometimes after drifting around the periphery for 12 years or more. FANNING TAKES THE QUIK PRO 09

Congrats to Mr Michael Eugene Fanning on scoring his second consecutive ASP win at the Quik Pro France. The waves in Les Bourdaines were small and punchy and with the swell dropping for the rest of the week the decision was made to run the rest of the comp whilst the going was good. A few shock results with Tiago Pires taking down Kelly in a last minute clincher and Joel going out early, it has left Mick in second place with less than 200 points seperating him and Joel going into the next event, The Billabong Pro, Mundaka. As usual the aussies celebrated in style at The Cafe Paris in Hossegor last night....with another shock result, Mick Fanning losing a 100m sprint to an unknown 'larger' gentleman!
Big Thanks to Tanja for the passes into the event and a big shout to Flo for the video....great day!

THE GREAT PLASTIC DEBATE

According to the UN, each square kilometre of the ocean contains 120,000 pieces of floating plastic. In certain areas, there is six times the amount of plastic than plankton. It’s time to convince our lawmakers of the urgent need to act.

The ocean currents have actually given birth to two large masses of ever-accumulating trash, known as the Western and Eastern Pacific Garbage Patches, sometimes collectively called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The Eastern Garbage Patch floats between Hawaii and California; scientists estimate its size as two times bigger than Texas . The Western Garbage Patch forms east of Japan and west of Hawaii. Each swirling mass of refuse is massive and collects trash from all over the world. The patches are connected by a thin 6,000-mile long current called the Subtropical Convergence Zone. Research flights showed that significant amounts of trash also accumulate in the Convergence Zone.

Scary stuff huh!

Dolphins are intelligent, sentient beings and their behavior and societies can be compared to humans in many ways. In that way, slaughtering thousands in one go is morally wrong. If you don't care about that, care about the fact that dolphin meat is high in mercury and extremely toxic to humans, and they are giving it away to schools and selling it in supermarkets labeled as other kinds of meat, like whale. As surfers the ocean is our responsibility, we rely on it for our addiction, i wanted this to be the first thing i posted as we need to change so many things about our attitude toward the ocean. This movie highlights a huge problem....watch it....learn...and help change their ways.
